Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders
According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, nearly 3% of the United States' population may have some form of eating disorder and nearly 10% of girls and women have a diagnosed eating disorder. Of equal concern is the finding that 80% of all adult women in the U.S. report dissatisfaction with their appearance. Eating disorders, however, don't exclusively involve under-eating. Obesity, for example, is an equally serious condition associated with five of the ten leading causes of death and disability in the United States and is also on the rise.
Treatment for eating disorders typically involves psychotherapy in conjunction with nutritional counseling, supportive body work, and medication to break the cycle of using food as a form of self-soothing or self-punishment.
